Hard Hat & Helmet Options at Absafe

Choosing the right helmet means matching it to the hazard, the environment, and the specific site requirements. A standard construction safety hard hat suits most general site work, but electrical environments, underground spaces, and extreme heat all call for a different specification.

Standard Industrial Hard Hats

A hard hat is an essential part of a complete PPE setup. It has a rigid ABS or polycarbonate shell with an internal suspension system that absorbs and distributes impact energy away from the skull.

Hard hats also feature:

  • Ratchet or pin-lock adjustment for a secure, repeatable fit.
  • Slots for face shield and earmuff integration – important if workers also need eye protection or hearing protection on site.
  • Vented or non-vented shell.

Electrical-Rated Safety Helmets

Electricians, powerline and substation workers, and others working near live or potentially energised equipment may require a Class E-rated safety helmet. Class E helmets are electrically proof-tested at 20,000 volts and are designed for work where electrical hazards are present.

Class E helmets are available in both vented and non-vented configurations.

Safety Helmets with Sunshade

Outdoor workers need reliable protection not just from falling objects but also from the strong Australian sun. Helmets with extended brims and clip-on sunshades significantly reduce UV and heat exposure to the face, neck, and ears.

At Absafe, we stock:

  • Full-brim hard hats – the brim is integrated into the helmet shell.
  • Clip-on sunshade attachments – fit over a standard short-brim hard hat, allowing the same helmet to be used indoors and outdoors.

A helmet with sun protection is a must-have item alongside other headwear such as neck flaps and sun-rated balaclavas.

Bump Caps

Bump caps are lightweight caps with a rigid plastic insert to protect against minor bumps and scrapes against fixed, stationary objects in low-hazard environments.

They are appropriate for:

  • Food processing and light assembly, where headroom is limited but falling object risk is negligible.
  • Workers moving under low shelving or conveyors.
  • Mechanics working under vehicles.

Note that bump caps do not meet AS/NZS 1801 and do not provide impact protection against falling objects, penetration, or electrical hazards. They must never be used as a substitute for an industrial safety helmet on a regulated construction, mining, or industrial site.

Hard Hat Inspection and Maintenance

Before every use, inspect the shell for cracks, dents, or discolouration. Check the internal suspension for fraying, cracks, or stretched, misshapen, or deformed areas. A cracked or damaged hard hat must be replaced immediately; however, damage is not always visible on the surface.

If your hat has taken a significant impact – whether from a falling object or a drop from height – it must be replaced. An impact can compromise the helmet’s protective structure even when there’s no visible damage, so it may not provide the same level of protection a second time.

Also, most manufacturers recommend replacing hard hats every 2–5 years for the shell and every 12 months for the internal suspension system.
