Camping and the Right Gear

February 18, 2015

There are a few essentials when thinking about going camping. Whether you are only going for a day, the weekend, or on an extended outdoor adventure, bringing the right equipment with you can be as important as where you go.

Besides the very obvious camping must haves: A tent, Sleeping Bag and Pad, chairs, an Eskie, and Food... there are often a lot of items you might not have realised you need until you are already in the middle of the bush. Here is a list for you to consider next time you pack for your camping extravaganza!

  1. A lantern or light: When the sun goes down unless the stars are bright enough to illuminate your campsite, having some light is essential if you plan on staying up past dark. Having aheadlamp is often the best when navigating through a dark tent or to the far away (and dark) drop toilets. A headlamp is always easy to find (on your head) and has hands free lighting convenience that is hard to beat. A good LED  head lamp is rugged, energy-efficient and long-lasting. Try aPelican 2760 LED Headlight orPetzl Tikka Pro both under $50.00 AUD and both over 100 lumen.  If a headlamp isn't really your style, try thePelican 3310 PL Photo-Luminescent Flashlight it glows in the dark so your days of fumbling around in the dark are over!
  2. Water Bottle: Water is the secret to life. It really is. So it is super important to stay hydrated. We really like the wide mouthNalgene water bottles because they are easy to clean and they have measurements on the outside of the bottle so you know how much water you are drinking. Our favourite is the1000ml Glow in the Dark bottle that, you guessed it, Glows in the Dark! Perfect to find any time, especially when the sun disappears.
  3. Condiments: Steak and Sausage are great but made even better with some tomato and BBQ sauce. Potatoes on the fire are the ultimate camp food but not without your trusty salt and pepper. It's the little things that count when turning a camping cook up into a feast so whatever you do dont forget the condiments. Single serving sizes of jam and butter are also handy for morning toast.
