The 3M Diffusion Monitor is a sampling device designed to measure average concentrations of certain contaminants over a measured time interval.
It can be used for either personal or area monitoring. As a personal monitor, it is worn near the breathing zone of individuals exposed to potentially hazardous environment. When used as an area monitor, hang it away from walls, corner, table tops, or other regions where the air movement in the room may be limited.

The 3M Organic Vapor Monitor 3520, with Backup Section uses the proven scientific principle of diffusion, which is the gradual mixing of molecules of two or more substances. Primary and back-up sorbent pads are included for sampling demanding environments. Especially suited for monitoring compounds like acrylonitrile, butadiene and methylene chloride for which activated carbon shows limited capacity. It has two stages for increased sampling capacity. Increased sampling may be necessary when sampling volatile compounds (compounds with low boiling points), high or unknown concentrations, complex mixtures, or when sampling in high humidity conditions. It has an 18-month shelf life.
The 3M Organic Vapour Monitor 3520 is suited for compounds for which activated carbon shows limited capacity. It has the accuracy of +/-25% at a 95% confidence level for many workplace contaminants.
The ethylene oxide diffusion monitors contain a single treated charcoal adsorbent pad. The 3551 must be analyzed within 4 weeks after sampling. The 3551 monitor is designed to be analyzed by the user or by an independent laboratory.
Meets current OSHA accuracy requirements for 8-hour sampling which are +/- 25% at 1.0 ppm, +/- 35% at 0.5 ppm. Also meets accuracy requirements for short-term exposure limit (STEL) sampling of +/- 35% at 5.0 ppm.

It monitors personnel or work areas in health care, laboratories and in the chemical, pulp/paper, foundry and textile industries. Analysis procedure is available upon request. The monitor uses a bisulfite-impregnated filter and is analyzed by colorimetry. The 3721 can be used for 8 hour TWA sampling to meet the OSHA requirement of +/-25% accuracy at 0.5-5.0ppm. However, this monitor does not have the sensitivity for short term exposure limit (STEL) monitoring. It has an 18-month shelf life.
