How a PAPR Respirator Works
A PAPR respirator has four core components:
- Blower unit – a battery-powered motor that draws air in and pushes it through the filter.
- Filter – removes the hazard from the air before it reaches the wearer.
- Breathing tube – carries filtered air from the blower unit to the headtop.
- Headtop – the hood, helmet, or facepiece the wearer puts on.
Air is delivered to the wearer under positive pressure, so if there's any gap in the seal, clean air pushes outward and contaminated air cannot be drawn in. It's a fundamental advantage over negative pressure masks, where your own breathing creates suction that can pull contaminants inside.
What Hazards PAPR Respirators Protect Against
PAPR respirators combined with the right filter protect against a wide range of workplace hazards.
With P2 or P3 particulate filters, they protect against:
- Silica dust from concrete cutting, grinding, and demolition.
- Asbestos fibres.
- Welding fumes and metal particulates.
- Wood dust – a Group 1 carcinogen under IARC classification.
- Lead dust.
- Biological agents, including virus-laden liquid droplets.
With the correct gas cartridge, PAPR respirators protect against gases and vapours:
- Organic vapours – solvents, paints, coatings.
- Acid gases – hydrogen chloride, sulphur dioxide.
- Ammonia.
- Multiple gas types simultaneously (with ABEK cartridge combination).
- Mercury vapour.
It's important to match the filter type to the actual hazard or use a combination filter when various threats are present. If you're not sure which filter you need, contact our team at Absafe – we're here to help you choose the right one.

Helmets and hard hat headtops – suitable for sites where hard hat compliance is required. Some models are compatible with hearing protection and communication systems.
-
Replacement filters and cartridges – particulate (P2/P3), gas type (A/B/K/ABEK), combination, and specialist types.
-
Breathing tubes, belts, and accessories – harness parts, spare airflow indicators, and other components to keep your respiratory system operating effectively.
