Silica Dust Mask Requirements in Australia
Since 1 September 2024, new national regulations apply to all work involving crystalline silica, including concrete, brick, pavers, grout, mortar, tiles, sandstone, and any other material containing 1% or more crystalline silica.
Under Australian WHS regulations and AS/NZS 1716:2012:
- P2 is the legal minimum for all silica dust exposure in Australia.
- P3 is required for high-hazard silica environments and licensed asbestos removal work.
- Fit testing is mandatory for all tight-fitting masks before use, and every 12 months thereafter.
- Workers with facial hair at the seal point must use a PAPR with a loose-fitting hood or helmet, as tight-fitting respirators cannot provide a reliable face seal.
Silica Dust Respirator Range at Absafe
At Absafe, we stock complete mask-and-filter kits for immediate setup, individual replacement parts, and PAPR components from the industry's most trusted names, such as 3M, Sundstrom, and CleanSpace.
Disposable Silica Dust Masks
A disposable silica dust mask is a single-use negative-pressure respirator with a built-in filter. Certified to P2 under AS/NZS 1716, it suits lower-duration silica tasks and situations where maintaining a reusable mask isn't practical.
Main features:
- No cartridge changes – the entire mask is discarded after use.
- Must be fit-tested on the individual wearer.
- Duckbill and flat-fold styles to suit different face shapes.
- Some models include an exhalation valve to reduce heat and moisture build-up during longer shifts.
Reusable Half-Face Silica Dust Respirators
A reusable dust mask for silica uses replaceable cartridges and provides a more consistent, testable seal than a disposable option. It's the better long-term solution for workers regularly exposed to silica dust: concrete cutting and grinding, demolition, tunnelling, and masonry work.
At Absafe, you can buy complete mask-and-filter kits (mask body, cartridges, and all fittings included) or individual silica dust respirators.
Main features:
- Use P2 cartridges for standard silica work; P3 cartridges for higher-hazard applications.
- Combination cartridges are available when chemical vapour hazards are also present.
- Don't suit workers with facial hair at the seal point.
- Lower ongoing cost than disposables for regular users.
Full-Face Respirators for Silica Dust
A full-face respirator for silica dust with P3 filtration is the best choice for the highest-hazard silica environments: high-silica natural stone, combined silica and chemical vapour risk, or tasks where eye protection is also needed.
Full-face masks cover the entire face, including the eyes, and deliver a tighter seal than half-face options. They are also the only tight-fitting mask type capable of achieving true P3 protection.
Main features:
- Available with combination cartridges for mixed dust and gas/vapour environments.
- Requires fit testing.
- Built-in eye protection eliminates the need for separate safety glasses.
PAPR – Powered Air Purifying Respirators for Silica Dust
A PAPR is the right solution when workers cannot achieve a reliable face seal, whether due to facial hair or face shape.
A battery-powered motor draws air through a P3 filter and continuously supplies filtered air under positive pressure to a loose-fitting hood or helmet. Because filtered air is continuously supplied under positive pressure, contaminated air cannot enter through gaps around the hood or helmet.
Main features:
- No fit testing required for loose-fitting hood and helmet configurations.
- No breathing resistance – the motor does the work, reducing fatigue on long shifts.
- Compatible with hard hats, hearing protection, and face shields, which is important on sites with multiple PPE requirements.
Absafe stocks complete PAPR kits as well as individual components – hoods, helmets, filters, batteries, and breathing tubes – for sites already running a powered air program.
